It's time for me of new challenges. I'm leaving Emakina to create my own company with some other guys: 1MD. We try to be online really soon!

1 month with Flash CS4

Now, it's 1 month I work with flash CS4 demo at home. What's the verdict? I can tell you, I'm not going to buy this upgrade right now.

I liked:
- new organisation of interface (much space for the working "canvas")... but it's not enough (see further)
- search in library
- seems faster, more reactive for little projects
- Thank god, now it can browse font family (can find the Din Medium Italic for example and not just the "Din" as before).
- Of course the 3D rotations, moves, etc.
- Pixel Blender: a new world of distortion, incredible effects, transitions,...

I hated:
- the memory usage (with my macbook pro and 2gb it become quickly unusable), so slower for big projects
- the poor update of interface for development. Flex builder or flashDevelop is 10 times ahead.
- the motion tween interface. After 1 month, I still can't use it. I think there is a big potential in term of animations. You could be really precise and make eases as you want but actually you can't... the interface is just a crap. It take 90% of your screen if you want to animate everything you want and so you can't see the result:

So at the end you are just frustrated you are not able to exploit 100% of the possibilities just because of this stupid interface. And yeah, another great thing: you can't make the value of your "ease" more than 100% or less than 0%. So you can't make a bounce effect at the exact position you want (just try to do it, you'll see what I mean). Just take a look at the video on adobe TV http://tv.adobe.com/#vi+f1590v1014 it seems even the adobe guy is not comfortable with the motion interface.
- I still hate the sticky effect of the interface. When you move windows it accidentally stick to another window or to the border of your screen... For a mac user it's really a pain, especially if you use a tablet.
- Fonts still have different render if dynamic or static (line spacing). Still have problem when exporting on PC, some fonts move a little (I don't have this problem with photoshop, illustrator, indesign).
- Your projects can quickly become a mess. The interface was made for simple projects or simple animations. But now you have incredible powers (3D, new motion tools, pixel effects) so you can make huge projects, huge animations but then everything become confuse and you lose a lot of time finding everything, moving a keyframe, changing a tween, etc. I think flash should now turn to interface like Nuke or Shake. Because of all its 3D capabilities. It's time to grow up Flash!

My conclusion
If I use flash CS4, after 1 or 2 hours I'm just frustrated to have so much great tools in such inadequate interface. So I'll just use flash as I'm doing now; trying to make as much as possible in photoshop, illustrator or flex builder and use the less possible flash IDE. In fact I just use it to compile and quickly integrate graphic stuff.

Maybe one day Flash is going to get a good interface?

Shadow Catcher in C4D

Finally, I found how to render a shadow with alpha in Cinema 4D (maxon) thanks to the shadowcatcher plugin.

It's especially useful when you need to import an object an its shadow into flash as a png 24bits.

So I was curious and ready to be amazed by the power of the new rich media software from Microsoft...and finally I was quite disapointed.

Ok there are good videos...but what about interactivity ? A big mosaic which is supposed to give you an immersion feeling... but all you feel is a lot of work spent on learning the technology and not on a real immersive world.
For me this website designed as a common sad grid won't shake the web.

D&AD awards 08

I never found the time to talk about the famous awards of D&AD. Awards not for profit as they said. I think it's the only award that is really significant.

So let's talk a little about the awards of 2008:

UNIQLOCK.
You all remember this campaign with girls dancing for the clothing brand Uniqlo. It was a widget for blogs, with a video permanently different. Depending the time and even the seasons (at midnight they go sleep, in summer they wear Unliqlo t-shirts, etc). Every hours there was special video sequence. It can even be used as alarm, screen savers etc.
The result 27 000 widgets from 76 countries, 68 million views, parodies on youtube,... Great job guys. you deserve your black pencil. They have make an original and creative concept buzzing around the world.

Ebay France
A smart advertising with incredible results. It can be resumed as this "For the 1st time in the world a brand puts its adverstising space up for auction". People bought the ad space to ebay and ebay helped these people to sell their own items. The result was phenomenal, a lot of buzz on french tv channels. Everyone talked about that... And the result for the brand? 38% specific recognition, 55% promptd recognition, 8 times the tv norm. And a yellow pencil!

It's really rare a website receive a black pencil. But it deserve it. This incredible online game with impressive graphics, funny mini-games, beautiful animations, ... A piece of art!

Gorilla
I think it was the most famous AD the last year. Everyone heard about it. And the impact for the brand was more than significant, I saw a presentation from Fallon (the agency behind this AD), and I think the brand awareness has grow up of 33% after the release of this AD. There were a lot of parodies on the web, 2 500 000 views on youtube... Impressive, creative and efficient. Black pencil for them of course!

Adobe CS4... The next big step

Today, I've watched the video of Adobe Financial meeting, seems ultra-boring, but they make a sneak preview (at 0:18 of the video) of their next major update: Adobe creative suite 4.

In general: interface reworked. Now even on mac you have unified panels and a grey background instead of viewing your desktop. You also get "tabs" to browse between opened documents. After testing Fireworks beta CS4, I don't feel lost with the new kind of interface. That seems really good improvements to me.

Photoshop CS4
John Nack says it, the major feature is performances. That promises a lot! In the video, he plays with an enormous picture as it was a jpg of 100Kb.

Thermo.

A new software in the suite. Its goal is to fill the gap between designer and developers. To resume it's like add interactivity in your psd files. I'm not really sure of the utility of this tool. Seems too basic for me, it only integrate standard interactivities, like srollbar, basics rollover, etc... But designers don't want to use BASIC stuff. They always want impossible stuff, they can't do alone. In fact Thermo is like flash for designers only. But wait and see...

After effects CS4.

They don't show lot of new stuff, but I can already see they added a search field in the timeline panel. Great! They integrated tools to preview your video on mobile phones. They also showed a new cartoon effect... I don't know why because it totally useless... Who cares of this kind of filters? The good point is they make the demo on macos X. So we can hope they worked on performances on our macs.

Flash CS4.
Ok you all already know a lot about flash CS4, thanks to the release in beta of Astro (flash player 10). So ok now we have Z axis, pixel bending capabilities, bones, etc.

In the demo, we can see how easy it is to play with rotation Z. To create tween, and to modify tween. Every tween is like a vector line you can transform, rotate etc. I love that! They showed how easy it is to integrate a video into a text rotation in 3D.

There is also an incredible new tool to extract moving stuff from video. You just draw some guides and the filter do the rest. The quality of course is not like a real blue key but it can really help sometimes.
Flash and after effects tends to share a lot of their functions. It remembers me when photoshop started to integrate illustrator functions and vice versa. I dream of the day we could copy paste elements between flash and AE like smart object with PS and illustrator.

Adobe media player.
I think they hope a lot about this AIR application. But personally I don't see why and how. It's juste like thousand of media view applications but running painfully slow and memory consumptive thanks to the flash technology behind (comparing to native mac or windows applications I mean). But I'm not a big fan of AIR right now. I just need to be convinced with good examples...

It's not in the video but you can try Fireworks CS4 and Dreamweaver CS4 from adobe labs. I just give a shot at fireworks. Seems good and more reactive. Clean interface. But as I'm not a regular user of this software, I'm not the best beta-tester.
Soundbooth CS4 is also available to download and test. This is a sound editor application made for video editors and designers. For now I prefer to stick with Apple Soundtrack, it's already full of functions I don't know how to use so I don't want to spare time in learning another sound software

Doritos Quest

Stress, new justice's videoclip

I just saw this new viral-buzzing-new videoclip from Justice (famous electro music band in France). Another "subjective" view as in REC or Cloverfield or the last ad nike I talked about here just few days ago. So, if we talk about technic, quality of pics, realisation, etc, I think it's pretty well done. The main message is a little perplex. As the little guys used the Justice's logo on their Jacket, is the band approve this free-violence? But the most disturbing is that is used to buzz around the band... But on other hand, that clip is no so violent, the reality can be much worse, I think they should have go further in violence to really disturb people and make an efficient buzz, now everybody are accustomed. But let's see how efficient will be the buzz for this clip. I'm curious about that... it's an interesting experience to measure the disturbing level of people.

This website give me mixed feelings. I like the intro, the sound design. But I totally dislike the main concept "Vivez l'expérience" what piece of bullshit we already saw 100 times in 100 another ads. This kind of ads that clearly thinks the people are idiots. This website is just 5 parts with full of bullshit inside each of them. "Ses qualités dynamiques portées par un coeur vaillant vous procurent un plaisir de tous les instants", oh my god please... This kind of wording is so false. You CAN'T believe it, event just a second.

For the graphical aspect, it's a good work. Really well done, even in the small details. But with their old concept "each part of the website has a specific color" it give sometimes a bad mix of colors, for example in "Réalité", I HATE the little carpet near the car. Just ugly. And they fall into the old clichés: passion = red,security = blue, etc. Ok just go a little further, use something else than colors to give the good feelings and to communicate your message.

But the sound design is perfect, and the videos are big and nice. I've even found the car beautiful after watching them.

You don't think "oh but how they do that?!" or "wow impressive 3D" when seeing it you focus only on the message, but you can believe it's a piece of art and mastered by guys who know their work.

Luxology Modo 302 rox !

Just to say I'm learning 3D in my free time. And more specifically Modo, an amazing modeler. The best modeler I have ever seen. And I've seen masters in Maya or 3Dmax or even XSI at some graphic-events. This soft get incredible tools, everything is possible and so easy with its axis tools, its deformers, in fact all the basics tools are better than everywhere (ok most of them). The basic extrude or the knife is simply as it should be everywhere.
And Modo world-class renderer cranks out stunning images, and it's not that you have to learn for 3 months before getting a realistic image. You just add your lights, your sky, you activated GI and that's it. You already get more than good image.
With modo you can aslo sculpt like zBrush, and it's not a little function hidden in a corner of the interface, no sculpting in modo is a GREAT tool. Just to convince you, see this video.
Modo can animated. Ok it's not the main goal of modo. But you can already make good cam movements, morphing, organic animations (but not yet Bones).
I really recommend to see the Luxology.tv page; which contains lot of videos to learn modo. That's one of the best part in Modo, the website is full or ressources. The manuals are excellent. The community is friendly and know their soft.

And the last part is the optimisation. Modo is stunningly fast. And YES on mac too. The rendering engine is blowing. But even in the interface, you can modelize high complex models without problem.

I hope one day, modo is going to get the Mograph engine from Cinema 4D... Mmmh lovely ! And as I'm talking about C4D, you have to know the export from Modo in lightwave and the import in C4D is good. It keep the nurbs, the names, some basics textures.

Ok I think you see my point. Just check it and tell me about this master piece. And I almost forgot to say that modo is not expensive. You can get it now for less than 900$. Actually there is a discount of 125$. So you can get if for less than 500 euros!

Today www.southparkstudios.com released a new episode of their show : Close Encounters of the Internet Kind. Internet down in the all world! Every people are lost and desperates can't remember how they did before Internet... I don't want to talk a lot about that show (it doesn't need it), but I love the way they often use our bad habits in their TV show.

It's not new, but their website is a good new way of distributing video over internet. Ok we have to watch ads, but we have access all the episodes except a few one, not yet released on TV. I think it's a good deal. The website is easy to use and offer the necessary tools (S2F, embed, forums, avatar creation, production blog, etc)

Pikaboo.be use the same principle. I worked with Vinch on this project. The challenge was to make a website really cool visually but still simple and easy to use.
There is no bullshit, you know when you come on this website, ok they make videos and they are cool guys.

Photoshop CS4 is going to suxx on mac !

It's like a mini-bomb in the world of mac users. John Nack has just posted on his blog a comment about the new CS4 version of photoshop. To resume : on windows this version is going to use full 64-bit support. And for windows ONLY.
Why ? Because they developed Photoshop in carbon instead of Cocoa. Apple decided to not support 64-bit in carbon. Adobe is trapped now and need to deploy all their big monster photoshop in Cocoa.

Why 64-bit is good for us ?
Because as designers, we use really often BIG images. We need ram as much as possible, and photoshop can use huge amount of ram in 64-bit computing (more than 4Gb). So in certain circumstances, adobe is going to run 10 times faster. Ok not all the time 10x, but... It's going to generate lot of frustration in mac users camp.

Some times ago I discovered a little software: ScreenFlow. Really incredibly easiest software to record screencasts. I forgot about it until now I want to make some video explanations to explain how to use an admin for a client. I'm so happy to use a soft when everything work as you expect.

And I think we should think more as a webdesigners to produce video explanation of what we sell. Instead of big mails, or big manual in PDF. Juste some simple words, a little video and VOILA. Everybody is happy !

I found this interesting free PDF from wishfulthinking blog. It explain a good way to keep you focused on your creative work. And how to not spend time in mails, funny links, chatting, etc.

While reading this e-book, I was thinking about how can I organize myself to be not disturb by incoming mail?
And I came to this conclusion: I can easily and automatically know which mail is important and need urgent answer and which are not. The most urgent ones are from my actual clients I'm actually working with.
So I created a contact group with all these people. But this group is changing, sometimes I add contact in this group, sometimes I remove, depending of my "actualities". If an email came from a contact in this group, it's considered as an unread email and I need to read it as soon as possible. Otherwise it goes to my two other folders: TO DO SOON or NO ACTION REQUIRED. The to do soon folder is read at a specific time and the no action required folder is read when I have the time, (the "not important but maybe interesting" links or funny mails I receive everyday). And with this method I'm not disturbed by all new emails, just the ones that matter.

I think (as I read in this pdf) it's important to have "rules" and habits everyday, for some stuff. To keep the maximum possible time on your creative jobs. So now, for 2008, I know I'll be better with my creative time management!

Appelez ça comme vous voulez, mais un nouveau vodcast (enfin 3 mois déjà mais j'étais en hibernation depuis des mois !) vient de sortir. Vodcast ou podcast, ou vidéocast ou TVonline en fait... peu importe.
Mais je vois pas ça souvent et encore moins en français... d'autant plus que là les moyens sont mis. (VW est derrière tout ca, mais c pas trop pub dans tous les sens pour la marque ).
Le dernier numéro était plutot sympa avec Plastic Bertrand et Shyamalan!

Des développeurs se sont mis à bosser sur un nouveau browser :

FLOCK 0.5

Il intègre éditeur de blog, feed RSS, gestion vachement sympa des bookmark (avec mutli tags), multi OS (win, macos X, linux pas amiga désolé) et sans doute plein d'autres petites choses. Il est basé sur le moteur gecko.

Voici une analyse du site de microsoft qui explique pourquoi et comment passer à un site en CSS et les bénéfices apportés. Très bien quand on doute des CSS ou quand on ne sait plus par où commencer son site en CSS... Eux ils conseillent (comme beaucoup) de faire son site sur un navigateur qui "rend" correctement les CSS (comme firefox ou safari ou opera) et puis seulement hacker son code pour IE.

Avec ce widget on peut envoyer facilement des gros fichiers à quelqu'un par e-mail.
Bon c'est un peu laborieux à mettre en place:
- avant tout se créer un compte sur le site LiveCargo
- faut télécharger l'application (une fois downloadée l'installer puis supprimer) et le widget ici
- configurer le widget avec son compte fraîchement créé
Puis là c'est bon, hop drag'n'drop du fichier à envoyer (on peut choisir de le compresser ou non). L'avantage c'est que le site de LiveCargo va assez vite (plus vite que les autres sites du type).
